The Ultimate Guide To Creating A Blog In Nigeria

By Demilade Adebayo / October 20, 2019

So I recently got a comment on my previous article and was asked on how to create a Blog.

Well just as requested we are going to read through everything you need to know about creating a blog from the reason you need one, steps to take and how to go about it when done.

Let’s begin…

Why You Need A Blog

Now my best guess is that you already know what a blog is but the question is how much do you know. Most people just see blogs as a place where they can either find information or post random information that would be brought out by a search engine when imputed.

But it is way more than that, creating a blog can simply be a way to connect with billions of people who use the internet every day. And if you own a business, no matter how small it may be, creating a blog would be one heck of a way to expose your business to a very large audience.

Aside from the most popular reason most people open blogs which is to gain money other reasons include:

Sharing your views and opinions

Blogging gives you a chance to have your own platform at which your voice can be heard by anyone and everyone.

You can freely share your personal thoughts on a topic you are worried about or story that troubles you. And you don’t have to be a journalist or anything similar. It could be about your personal life or areas of study you wish to share.

It’s much favorable when you write based on topics you are interested in that way your blog does not seem like a bore to anyone. After all, you won’t be putting all of your minds into it.

Blogging allows you to ensure that all information included in the blog is factual.

Meet new people

When you have a blog with lots of quality content in it you’ll eventually begin getting lots of visitors but they don’t have to remain like that. They can become your friends, colleagues, partners, or lovers.

There are so many doors that could be open through that simple step. You simply get exposed to if you play your cards right, popular.

Stand Out

Have you ever heard of the 1% rule? well, it states that” only 1 percent of Internet users actively create new content, while the other 99 percent of the participants simply view it.

By blogging, you separate yourself from the 99 percent of people who don’t blog. Standing out is essential in an increasingly competitive economy. I for one know that I can boldly beat my check and boost a large audience that I contribute to the internet. Not just scheme through for random stuff.

Note that we are focusing on building a WordPress Website.

Now before we get into the steps you would need to take when opening your blog, you might want to consider the prerequisites.

  1. You’ll need to have an idea as to what the blog would be about. It could be fashion, sports, comedy, entertainment, Education or News. Most people just create a blog and dump it months later why? well because the blog doesn’t have a purpose to it.
  2. A domain name idea (this will be the name of your blog i.e Randomwords.com)
  3. A web hosting account (this is where your website live on the internet)
  4. A Stable Internet connection
  5. A smart device that enables browsing( Yes, you can create a website using your phone but we recommend you use a laptop or pc)
  6. Your undivided attention until you are done with this article.

The Steps Into creating a website Includes

  1. Getting a domain Name
  2. Hosting
  3. Installing WordPress
  4. Creating Your Website

Getting A Domain Name

Domain names are basically the name of your website, Facebook’s domain name is Facebook.com and Naijalifehack domain name is, you guessed right Naijalifehack.com. You could decide to give yours a .net at ending of your domain name or even a .org, all works as long as it hasn’t been taken by someone else. domain names are like the address at which anyone can use to get to your site and if you want to create one it’s going to cost you a small amount of money.

Cost starts at around $10 for new domain names. If you are a Nigerian based business or could someday open shop in Nigeria or an E-commerce store, it will be a good idea to register a .ng domain name. This starts at 2,500 Naira ($7) for .com.ng and 15,000 Naira ($42) for .ng domain names.

Domain names cost from about three to five thousand naira, per year! well depending on where you register. You could also pay per month if you want. Here are some highly recommended sites you can buy and register your domain name in Nigeria.

Hosting

Hosting I slike a computer which runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and a full 365 days a year. Its job is too old all of the data and information about your site and always keep it online. So if you think of ti getting a domain name and not dealing with hosting will only end up with you having a web address with no information, logo or anything at all. All a person will see after typing in your address is a blank page. Or simply an error message.

So basically the hosting serves as a container that keeps all of your information and displays ti to anyone who types in your web domain name.

  •  GoDaddy
  • WordPressHosting
  • BluehostWordPress Hosting
  • DreamHost
  • HostGator

Note: Some Domain registration sites also enable you to host

WordPress is called a content management system which means it just serves a means for you to manage and create all of your content. It’s an amazing method which makes website development possible for anyone.

About a decade ago only programmers and people with coding skills were able to create websites but now all you need is common sense an just like that you have your own front on the internet.  All you have to do is drag around, type, upload pictures, videos or whatever content you wish. Change around a few settings to your desired pick and you have yourself a website.

So all you have to do is Install WordPress Into your website, now guess what, WordPress is an Open source website which means it is free. The next step here is to build on the foundation you laid.

Now you’ve bought land, you have an address, you have the electricity bills and all that stuff cleared, all that is left is for you to build your house. And this could take less than 10 minutes of your time.

When you are done installing WordPress from your Hosting domain you’ll get a username and password which you’ll use to log into your site. Next step would be to enter the name fo your site and at the end o the name just put a /wp-admin. Here’s an example, if your domain name is 123.com you’ll input, 123.com/wp-admin. This URL here will take you to the login page for your site.

Note: Be sure to copy out your username and password in a safe place to avoid complications later on.

Next step would be to change your password as the one you were given as you noticed where a bunch of random numbers and letters.

After changing that though the setting you’ll need to download plugins. Plugins are like special features on your site.
